What is Sexual Harassment?

Sexual harassment is a major problem and a serious issue that makes it hard for a women from living, working, and moving safely in society. In India, even though many people still hold patriarchal beliefs, the law clearly states that any kind of harassment is wrong and punishable.

The aim of the law is to protect women and ensure their dignity. However, laws alone are not enough. There must be proper enforcement, support systems, awareness, and responsibility from everyone.

Women, employers, and society all need to work together to prevent harassment. Spreading awareness and taking action are just as important as punishing offenders to create a safer environment for women.

Examples include derogatory remarks, spreading rumors, and repeated unwanted social invitations.

•Non-verbal harassment :

•Psychological harassment

Also known as bullying or power harassment, this is often non-physical behavior that adversely affects a person's psychological or physical well-being.

It can be harder to identify and may involve gestures, looks, or other non-verbal communication that is designed to humiliate or intimidate.

PracticaI Measures: What Women, Communities & Employers Can Do:

Women's empowerment and safety depends on coordinated efforts at three levels Individual, Community, and Institutional. Each plays a critical role in creating an environment where women can participate fully with safety, and equally participate in society and the workplace.

  1. Awareness of Rights and Opportunities: Women need to be aware of the laws and policies that protect them such as laws against domestic violence, sexual harassment, workplace discrimination, and rights related to maternity and employment. Awareness increases confidence and the ability to ask for fair treatment.

  2. Skill Development and Education: Skill development and education empower women to become economically independent by providing vocational skills, digital literacy, strong communication, leadership abilities, and financial stability. These skills help women access better opportunities, make decisions, and build a secure future.

  3. Financial Independence: Women can strengthen their position by managing their finances by opening bank accounts, saving regularly, understanding credit and investments, and seeking income-generating work or entrepreneurship to build independence and security.

  4. Building Support Networks: Joining women's groups, self help groups (SHGs), NGOs, or professional networks provides strong social and emotional support, helping women feel connected and confident. These networks also offer guidance and mentorship, legal assistance, job opportunities, and collective strength to raise important issues and advocate for their rights.

  5. Taking Steps for Personal Safety: Women can adopt practical safety measures to protect themselves and feel more secure. These include using safety applications for quick assistance, sharing travel details with trusted contacts, staying aware of their surroundings, and learning basic self-defence techniques to handle emergencies with confidence.

  6. Reporting Harassment or Misconduct: Reporting harassment or misconduct helps protect women's rights and ensures a safer environment. By speaking up, documenting incidents, and seeking support from authorities or workplace committees, women can stop further harm and help create a culture where such behaviour is not tolerated.
